The star of "The Bullwinkle Show" is more than just a moose. He is the finest example of the great North American Clod. Having been born and raised in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, he attended the Philpott School for Exceptional Children (he was the only student with antlers, which would tend to make him exceptional) and M.I.T. (The Moose Institute of Toe-dancing). After distinguished service in the Armed Forces as a destroyer radar mast and an officers' club hat-rack, Bullwinkle decided to study acting under the great student of Stanislavski, Francis the Talking Horse. Early in his training, Bullwinkle was alternately determined to become an animated duck, a bunny rabbit, and an iguana, but a singular lack of interest by casting directors persuaded him to abandon this approach. After several off-Broadway roles (in Laos and Yucca Flats, Nevada), Bullwinkle hit the Great White Way in "Irma La Moose" and "Charley's Antlers." (The Great White Way, incidentally, is the main street of Frostbite Falls, which is snowed in 11 months out of the year). Away from the Jay Ward Productions Studio (where "The Bullwinkle Show" is filmed and de-contaminated), Bullwinkle likes nothing better than curling up in front of a fire with a pile of good books. "They burn so nice and slow," he says. Part of Bullwinkle's success has been due to his animal intelligence. "He has more brains in his little finger," says Producer Ward, "than he has in his whole head!" Cultural Impacts Bullwinkle's Famous Sayings |
