Toons and Culture

The first step in the TV animation process begins with sketching a background layer on a special slide called a cel. In this illustration, the background scene is individually drawn and painted before any of the characters are even penciled in. This scene contains the very popular Ward creation Captain Horatio Magellan Crunch, the second-longest running cereal character of all time (after Kellogg's Tony the Tiger).

Step 1 The background scene is sketched in pencil.

Step 2 The background is then painted to add color.

Step 3 Characters are sketched into the colored background scene.
