Toons and Culture

Rocky, the Flying Squirrel, is, in addition to being the lifelong friend of Bullwinkle Moose, the proud mascot of the Air Force 319th Garbage Disposal and Sanitation Wing. With Bullwinkle, he is one-half of a team that is fearless, stainless, and brainless.

Educated in private schools (squirrels were not yet integrated), Rocky majored in Snare Drums at Juilliard (he was indeed the Institute's first drum major) before finishing up at Cal Tech (Calvin's School of Supermarket Technology).

Despite his obvious sophistication, Rocky still retains his squirrel's penchant for collecting nuts, as witness his partner, Bullwinkle.

In his crusade against evil, Rocky has exhibited one of the most remarkable demonstrations of obtuseness in history, being film-flamed and conned by even the most transparent rascals he comes in contact with. Yet, it is this same Rocket J. Squirrel who carries on a personnel correspondence with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. (Dr. Schweitzer is a veterinary dentist in Tarzana, California).

Little wonder, then, why Rocky's portrait (tastefully executed in bottle caps and colored chicken feathers) occupies a prominent place in the Swineherds' and Farmers' National Bank in his hometown of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota.

Cultural Impacts
Rocky, along with his lifelong companion Bullwinkle, has represented a number of General Mills cereals from 1959 to 1970, including Cheerios, Cocoa Puffs, Jets and Trix.
